The UK is Going to Kill 30 Million People!

Okay, so maybe not. But Jonathon Porritt, one of Gordon Brown’s leading green advisers, “is to warn that Britain must drastically reduce its population if it is to build a sustainable society.” So how much is this drastic change? The country needs to reduce its current population of 61 million (by 2031 it’s said to reach 71 million), down to the 30 million of the late Victorian times.

Porritt says population control can help cut green house emissions, and the population in the UK plays a greater factor in the environment than other developing countries. On the other hand, George Monbiot, a prominent writer on green issues, has “criticized population campaigners, arguing that ‘relentless’ economic growth is a greater threat.”

Many experts believe that, “since Europeans and Americans have such a lopsided impact on the environment, the world would benefit more from reducing their populations than by making cuts in developing countries.”

Now, we all know population control is a very sensitive political topic because it conflicts with religion, culture and immigration groups, etc., so you can imagine how much more complicated this proposal is going to get. If anything, I personally think India should be next up in terms of population control and follow China’s footsteps because those two countries alone have the greatest population than any other country.

What do you guys think about population control? Should the UK be next or should another country do it first? Also, can you think of any better proposals? And no, nuking a country doesn’t count (haha).

  2. India definitely needs to be on top of the list of controlling its population.

  3. That picture is too funny. And I agree, India should be next.

  4. Population control is a terrible idea. I don’t understand why anyone, government or not, should be able to tell anyone that they cannot have children and that certain people are not allowed to reproduce but some are. Even if you institute a limit per family, I think that’s wrong as well. As an individual, you determine how much to procreate. There are other ways of controlling green house gas emissions that don’t involve telling individuals how to live their lives. This is a terrible idea.

  5. I agree that it’s not a good idea in terms of green house gas emissions, and that the government should not interfere with the personal lives of people, but the one thing that I can understand with China’s population control idea is that they tax the people who want to have more children (or something along those lines). It may not be THE right thing to do, but it makes sense. If anything, birth control should be more widely available.

  6. And part of the reason why I put up the picture is because I really don’t think population control will be allowed to work.

  7. In China you are taxed for more than one child, but there are several loop holes. Not to mention female babies are often ‘tossed’ away in hopes of receiving a male offspring.

I believe most of the worlds environmental concerns are fixable, save for population. There are resources that can sustain us with minimal changes, but the one thing the planet cannot take is overpopulation.

Our own evolutionary behavior wont allow it either. Resources will become so scarce that it will simply be survival of the fit. We will compete for resources and systematically wipe out a large portion of our population. That’s the hard way to fix the biggest concern among environmentalists!… Read More

Truth is the Planet will be fine. It’s we who wont be if we don’t put ourselves in check. Either we reduce our population or natural selection will do it for us.

  9. Although allowing the government to control and dictate the lives of individuals is dangerous, people should be able to (in an ideal world, that we obviously do not live in) control their own reproduction and limit themselves. It really makes me depressed when I see a family of 8 struggling to get by. The parents should know better than to have that many children because they obviously cannot economically sustain that. Example: octamom! People like that put a strain on both the government and on resources.

But honestly, the world isn’t harsh enough to allow people to suffer for their actions. At least not in the U.S. which is why people receive government benefits and aid when they cannot afford to take responsibility.

In regards to the UK, they shouldn’t bother reducing population, as they have quite slow growth as it is. Focus should be reducing waste/pollution output.
